Making Shadow Puppets in Science

Making Shadow Puppets - 9.10.18

We have been learning about the size and shape of shadows. So that we could understand how shadows can change, we made our own shadow puppets and used torches as the light source. The performances we did enabled us to think carefully about the distance the shapes created were to the light source. This meant sometimes our puppets appeared huge or very small.

We’ve also been comparing materials for how they block light or let light through and why these properties are important. The white paper puppets, although opaque, did produce a ‘lighter’ shadow compared to the thick black card that other puppets were made from.

It was really fun and we learnt loads! More information about what we found out can be seen in our Science class scrapbook.
