Week 4

It has been another wonderful week of learning and discovery for our Year 6 pupils. As we head into a very important time of year, the children have shown incredible focus, curiosity, and resilience across all their subjects.

English: From Exploration to Biography

We have officially reached the end of our Endurance narratives, and the final pieces are truly gripping! This week, we shifted our focus to our next big writing outcome: a biography of the legendary explorer Ernest Shackleton. To sharpen our biographical writing skills, we:

  • Analysed a model text based on the life of Charles Darwin.

  • Began deep-dive research into Shackleton’s inspirational (and icy!) adventures.

Science: Protecting Our Planet

Our journey into sustainability continued this week as we explored the complex impacts of climate change. The classroom was full of passionate debate as students worked in groups to rank the most significant effects on our environment, humans, and wildlife. It was fantastic to see them using scientific evidence to back up their viewpoints.

Maths: Ready for the Challenge

With SATs fast approaching next week, our Maths sessions have been dedicated to a high-energy revision of our core objectives. The children have been tackling a wide range of problems with confidence, ensuring they are feeling sharp and ready for the challenge ahead. We are so proud of their "can-do" attitude! We also took our revision outside to complete arithmetic orienteering. Children worked with their partners to locate the questions from an arithmetic paper on the playground, calculate the answer and race to be the first team to get all 36 answers correct!

History & PSHE: Critical Thinking

  • History: We investigated the life of Ranjit Singh, discussing what truly makes a person "significant." By analysing various historical sources and considering the bias of the authors, the students formed their own sophisticated conclusions about his legacy.

  • PSHE: We focused on the concept of risk. Through different scenarios, the children categorised actions as "high risk" or "low risk," learning how to make informed, safe decisions.

A huge well done to Year 6 for their hard work this week—let's keep this momentum going as we head into SATs week!
