Geography

In Geography, Year 1 explored the question, “What can we find in our school grounds?” The children looked closely at familiar features around school and thought about how places can be shown on a map. They used symbols to represent what they could see and created their own maps of the school grounds. We also practised using words such as near, far, left and right to describe where different features are. The children enjoyed discovering how a map can help someone find their way around a place they know well.

English

This week we started writing our own stories based on 'Old Bear'. We have written our Opening Octopus and 'Build Up Bear. Miss Bryan and Miss Harry have been blown away with our writing!

Computing – Finding and Saving Our Work

In Computing, the children continued learning how to log in to Purple Mash using their own usernames and passwords. They explored the homepage and learned how icons help us find different tools. The children opened a Paint Project, created their own work and practised saving it so they could find it again in their My Work folder. These are important first steps towards using technology independently. A big thank you to our Digital Leaders, who patiently helped the children log in to the laptops and iPads!

Recycling Workshop

We also welcomed the BWD Environmental Education team to school for Recycling Week. The children learned about materials that can be recycled and watched a video showing what can happen to food waste. A quiz got everyone thinking about how long it can take for recycled materials to be made into something new. Afterwards, we put reuse into practice by turning toilet roll tubes into our own creative models. It was a lovely chance to see how something we might usually throw away can become a resource for art.
