This week in Maths, Year 1 have been introduced to part–part–whole models. The children have been exploring how a whole can be split into two parts and how those parts can be combined to make the whole again. Using cubes and part–part–whole models, they have been building numbers, counting each part and finding how many there are altogether.
To bring their learning to life, the children also played a practical game with a hoop and beanbags. The beanbags that landed inside the hoop made one part, while those outside made the other. Counting both groups helped the children see that all the beanbags together made the whole. There was even some healthy competition between Miss Bryan and Miss Tindall during the hoop game, adding to the excitement!
These hands-on activities have helped the children develop their understanding of parts and wholes and practise using mathematical vocabulary to explain their ideas.
Year 1 enjoyed a special visit from Year 2’s chicks! The children were excited to see the little visitors up close, observing their appearance and movements. It was a lovely opportunity to encourage curiosity about living things and talk about the importance of treating animals gently and with care. The chicks brought plenty of smiles to our classroom!
On Tuesday morning, Year 1 enjoyed a visit to Roman Road Library with their Year 6 buddies. It was lovely to see the children sharing books together, looking closely at the pictures and talking about the stories. Our Year 6 buddies helped make the visit special, supporting the younger children and spending time reading with them.
The children also enjoyed listening to Miss Harry and Miss Bryan read them a story. Sharing stories together was a wonderful way to celebrate the enjoyment of reading and explore what our local library has to offer.
It was a lovely morning of books, friendship and time together, helping to nurture our children’s love of reading and strengthen the relationships between Year 1 and their Year 6 buddies.
