At St. James', we believe that education extends far beyond the classroom walls. Our Wider Opportunities program is a foundational element of our curriculum intent, designed to build cultural capital by providing a coherent sequence of enriching experiences. From EYFS through to Year 6, we ensure that every pupil has inclusive participation in high-quality opportunities that extend beyond the core curriculum, ensuring all children are equipped with the knowledge and confidence to thrive in the wider world.
We offer a diverse range of Enrichment Afternoons, cultural events, and leadership roles to bridge the gap between academic study and real-world application. Whether it is a visiting theatre company bringing Shakespeare to life, practical first-aid training, or collaborative community celebrations, our goal is to provide a rich variety of experiences that drive meaningful personal development. We measure the impact of this provision not only through our pupils’ achievements but through their growing resilience, social capabilities, and enthusiasm for learning.
In EYFS: Enrichment begins with sensory exploration and play-based discovery. Children learn to wonder at the world, develop initial social skills, and build the confidence to explore new environments.
Across the School: As pupils progress, activities are mapped to be increasingly sophisticated. From learning life-saving first-aid skills in Years 3 and 4 to engaging with complex artistic, cultural, and inter-faith themes in Years 5 and 6, our program ensures a coherent sequence of development that prepares pupils for the academic and social rigour of secondary school.
By the time pupils leave St. James', they will have:
Broadened Perspectives: Encountered diverse cultures, art forms, and ideas that challenge their thinking and promote empathy.
Developed Resilience: Faced new challenges—from performing in front of an audience of 200 at our sell-out Talent Show to mastering new creative skills—with a "can-do" attitude.
Mastered Leadership: Through our 9 active Pupil Voice groups, children learn to represent their peers and advocate for change, ensuring they are active participants in our school community.
Wider Opportunities are central to our commitment to the whole child. These experiences prioritise:
Confidence & Independence: Providing a platform for children to find their voice, whether through performance or by leading their peers in Pupil Voice Group meetings.
Emotional & Spiritual Growth: Creating space to reflect on the world around them, including understanding different faiths and the moral lessons found in literature and community life.
Our enrichment program is a practical expression of our Christian ethos, helping pupils to live life to the full.
Compassion and Respect: By enriching Inter-faith Week with visitors and workshops—such as our explorations of Hinduism—we foster a deep respect for different beliefs and viewpoints.
Justice and Fairness: Our Pupil Voice structure ensures that every child has the chance to be heard, promoting fairness and democratic participation across the school.
Community: Events like our Talent Show bring our whole school family together, celebrating the unique gifts and talents God has given every child.
Communication is at the heart of our program. Whether pupils are debating a school improvement project in a Pupil Voice meeting, articulating their thoughts during religious education, or expressing themselves through music, dance, and comedy, they are constantly refining their ability to listen, question, and engage in respectful, meaningful dialogue.

After what has been one of the most challenging years, we decided to have a treat day to celebrate all the good things that have happened during this tough year. We had a magician visit us. He went to each class and the laughter could be heard throughout the whole school. It was a very sunny day and we all cooled down by having an ice-cream. Is there a better combination than magic and ice-cream? We don't think so.
What a memorable day it was.
