Week 4 has been all about accuracy—whether that was calculating the exact space inside a shape, choosing the perfect formal word for a debate, or hitting a clean backhand return.
We took our understanding of shapes to the next level this week by exploring Area.
The Formulae: We moved beyond simple counting squares to using formal calculations for rectangles, triangles, and parallelograms.
The Challenge: Students didn't just find the area; they even worked backwards! Given the total area, they had to use their division and algebraic thinking to calculate missing side lengths.
Key Concept: Remembering that for a triangle, Area = base × height ÷2
Our research from last week culminated in some truly sophisticated balanced arguments. The classroom sounded like a professional debating chamber!
Formal Voice: Children used high-level vocabulary such as advocates, critics, biodiversity, and socio-economic concerns.
The Goal: To present a fair, unbiased view of whether wolves should be reintroduced to the UK, using "on the other hand" and "consequently" to link their complex points.
Following our success with forehands, we turned our rackets around to master the backhand return.
Technique: We focused on the "cross-body" swing and maintaining a firm wrist to ensure the ball clears the net.
Progress: It was fantastic to see the students gaining enough control to start short rallies using both sides of the racket!
