Our leaders for Oracy at St James' are Mrs Malik and Miss Bryan and each year the Oracy Pupil Voice Group helps to drive the importance of oracy in our school.
Oracy is the ability to articulate ideas, develop understanding and engage with others through spoken language.
In school, oracy is a powerful tool for learning; by teaching students to become more effective speakers and listeners we empower them to better understand themselves, each other and the world around them. It is also a route to social mobility, empowering all students, not just some, to find their voice to succeed in school and life.

At St James' we believe in the importance of oracy and teach it discreetly from Reception to Year 6. Oracy outcomes are woven into the curriculum, focusing on progression, to give all children at St James the opportunity to develop these important life skills.

The children were elected to their role and came up with three main aims for the year ahead:
* Plan a whole-school oracy focus event - No Pens Day.
* Monitor Oracy throughout school - Kagan groups, talk rules, Watch your Words & oracy outcomes.
* Lead on Dine and Dialogue to ensure everyone engages.

Have a look at the Pupil Voice Padlet to see what our talk team are doing in school this year:

Each class has a set of talk rules that they agree together and these talk rules are regularly referred to in class. These talk rules are progressive and allow children to become good communicators and listeners.

St James' put down their pens (and pencils) for a fun day of speaking and listening activities. There were lots of opportunities for the children to develop and show their oracy skills. Each class had a show and tell where they brought in an item at home that they talked about in their KAGAN groups. They then presented one of those items to the whole class.
Every class took part in a class debate and the teachers were really impressed with how the children explained their opinions to the rest of the class.

One child from each class was chosen to receive a certificate in Friday's Celebration Worship. They really stood out on the day and the members of the Oracy Pupil Voice Group helped their teacher to choose the winner of this award.
