Our Learning this Week
Geography – Compass Directions
This week in Geography, Year 1 have been learning all about compass directions. The children explored the four main compass points – north, east, south and west – and learned that the arrow on a compass always points north.
We began by recapping our learning about weather and seasons, before watching videos and singing a compass directions song to help us remember each direction. The children used a fun mnemonic “Naughty Elephants Squirt Water” to support their understanding.
The children then had the opportunity to use real compasses, learning how to hold them correctly and identify north. We took our learning outside into the school grounds, where the children followed instructions using compass directions and explored what they could see when facing each direction. They recorded their observations by drawing and labelling features they could see to the north, east, south and west.
Back in the classroom, the children shared their ideas with a partner and practised using compass directions in full sentences, helping them to describe the location of features around them.
The children showed great enthusiasm and confidence when using compass directions and are developing a strong understanding of how these help us describe where things are in our local environment. ππ§
Computing
Over the last couple of weeks, our Year 1 children have been working hard in Computing as they started our new unit on Creating and Following Instructions.
The children have been learning that instructions need to be clear and in the correct order. They practised carefully following instructions during practical activities and then applied this learning on the computer , using simple programs and digital tasks.
It has been wonderful to see the children developing their listening skills, concentration and confidence while beginning to understand how computers follow instructions too .
A fantastic start to our Computing learning this term – well done, Year 1!
