Year 4 (Miss Smith)

Miss Smith is our class teacher.

Miss Mack is our teaching and learning assistant in the morning.

Miss Johnston is our teaching and learning assistant in the afternoon.

Miss Walsh is teaching us on a Thursday afternoon in autumn one.

This year our P.E days are Tuesday and Thursday. The children will need to come to school in their school PE kit. This must be a plain white t-shirt or the red school P.E t-shirt with black bottoms such as leggings, shorts or joggers and a pair of trainers or black PE pumps. If it is cold, your child can bring a plain black cardigan or jumper to wear. Earrings will need to be removed for P.E lessons.

This year your child will be given a maths scrapbook and will receive alternate homework each week. One week will be a 'talk token' in their homework book and this will be sent home every Friday. This is designed for you to talk about your child's learning with them at home. The next week will be a maths activity for them to complete and discuss. Please send their homework book back to school on or before every Friday so they can receive raffle tickets for completing their homework. Children will receive a 'Homework Heroes' raffle ticket for completing the talk token or the maths activity at home and at the end of the half term, one lucky winner will be drawn at random for a treat!

Spellings are also an expectation of homework in Year 4. This year we will be sending home spellings on a Friday, and we will be doing a weekly spelling check the following Friday. This is to support and enhance their writing. Please support your child in learning their spellings and practising them.

Reading is really important. Your child will have two reading books. One which is their home reader and one which is a reading for pleasure book for them to enjoy. We read to your child in class and during our daily Stop & Read sessions. We also have guided reading sessions and your child will be reading with an adult on a 1:1 basis.

To support this please could you read with your child for 10 minutes or more per day and then date and sign their reading record.  To encourage a love of reading we will give out raffle tickets for each time a child reads at home and has their reading record signed by an adult.

Your child will complete a multiplication tables check this year. We would like them to do well in this and it really helps with their maths if they know all of their times tables. We will be working on this in school this year but please also support us with this at home. There are many ways to learn times tables which could include reciting them, writing them down, listening to times tables songs etc. Your child will have allocated time to play on TT Rockstars in school each week but please encourage them to play on TT Rockstars at home as well as this is a fun way for them to learn! We also organise TT Rockstar competitions across school that your child can take part in.

We are looking forward to working closely with you this year to make sure your child has a wonderful time in Y4.  If you have any questions or would like to discuss anything please catch us on the door at the beginning or end of the day.  You can also contact us via the Year 4 email address (year4@stjameslowerdarwen.blackburn.sch.uk) or ring the office to arrange for a convenient time for a telephone conversation. Please be aware that the class emails are not checked every day so if it is an urgent matter please contact the school office team who will be happy to help.
