Talking to your child about War and Conflict

In light of recent news events around the world, we understand that some children may be hearing or seeing things that make them feel worried or confused. As a school, we always aim to support both our children and families when difficult topics arise.

We are sharing the attached guidance to help parents and carers talk with their children about news relating to war or conflict. It offers simple advice on how to answer questions honestly, reassure children, and help them make sense of what they may be hearing from news, social media, or conversations around them.

Link to the guidance:

Every child processes information differently, and emotions such as worry, confusion or curiosity are completely normal when hearing about distressing world events. Open, calm conversations can help children feel safe, heard and supported.

If your child has questions or worries, the guidance may help you approach these conversations in a reassuring and age-appropriate way.

As always, if you feel your child needs additional support, please do not hesitate to contact school.

Childnet

Childnet has created a brand-new resource for children aged from 8 to 11. Parents and carers can use the information to support their family on a range of subjects from staying safe online to advice about online bullying and gaming.

The pages have been written specifically for children to access if they have questions about staying safe online and include top tips, videos and short quizzes. This also makes them a fantastic resource for parents to use with their children to help support their family’s internet use.

Each page answers one of the following questions:

What should I do if someone online is mean to me?

What should I do if an online friend wants to meet up?

What do I need to know about online gaming?

How much time should I spend online?

What does the report button do?

What do I need to know about sharing things online?

What makes a good online friend?

How old do I need to be to access social media?
