Summer Term 2

This half term will be another fun packed one in our classroom with lots of great learning taking place. We will be looking at the classic story of 'The Enormous Turnip' to then allow us to create our own versions of the story-we will then share our stories with the children in reception class. This will help us to practise our story-telling skills and also highlight how important it is to make sure our writing makes sense. In our maths learning, we will be looking at fractions of a half and a quarter, looking at place value of numbers to 100 and learn about telling the time.

We will become historians and look at the significance of our local area: paying close attention to the buildings of our school and church and of the graveyard. As we become designers within our Design and Technology work, we will link our learning about structures to create churches. In computing, we will learn about spreadsheets, using vocabulary such as , 'cell' and 'sheet' and create little zoos using lots of different features.

Our PE lessons will help us to develop our throwing and catching skills, as well as passing and moving, to help with field games. Within RE, we will look at why Jesus is special and enjoy some role play opportunities for this. Please see our weekly updates with lots of photographs of our learning.

All About Year One

P.E Days -  Thursday morning

                  Friday afternoon

On P.E days children come to school in their sports wear.

Reading Books and Bags

These need to be brought in to school daily, to enable your child to be read with as and when.

Children will earn a raffle ticket for every time they read whether that's at home or school. The raffle tickets are put into a prize draw which is drawn at the end of every half term.

Homework

Each term your child will be given a homework booklet. The pages will be marked week 1; week 2; etc. They only need to complete the weeks work and hand the booklet in on a Monday for checking. The booklet has two pieces of work for each week, at the front is number work and at the back spellings.

Our Classroom Displays

We would like to share our classroom displays with you so that you can see all the things we have been doing.

RE and Worship - We have been looking at the Easter story and comparing things we associate with spring to what we know happened.

Geography - We have been looking at the different seasons and comparing these to other countries. We have measured rain fall; wind speed and cloud cover changes.

Science - We have been looking at the features of different materials, are they smooth; bumpy; shimmery; wooden; brick; plastic; fabric; etc and thinking about the purposes they are used for.

English - We looked at the story of the 'Three Little Pigs' then we wrote our own versions of the story.

Year One School Trip

On Tuesday 17th May, we went to Blackpool zoo with Year 5 and Reception. We had a great day and the weather was fantastic.

We left school at 9.15am and travelled on a double decker bus to the zoo. Our class sat on the upper deck at the front so we could see lots of things on the journey.

During our visit we saw lots of animals in their enclosures. We watched the seal show and learnt lots about them. At lunchtime we sat near the camel enclosure and the keepers told us all about 'habitats'.

We completed our day with a visit to the elephant enclosure and the dinosaur safari.

On tired feet we returned to the bus and quite a few of us had a little rest on the return journey.
