π’ Maths – Addition and Subtraction (within 20) π’
This week in Maths, Year 1 started their new learning on addition and subtraction within 20 by focusing on adding by counting on. The children built on their earlier learning by starting with a number and counting on to find the total, rather than counting from one each time.
We used a range of practical resources including counters, ten frames and number lines to help represent the maths and support understanding. The children explored ‘first, then, now’ number stories and learned that it is often quicker to start counting from the larger number.
The children showed great engagement when explaining their thinking, using number lines to show their jumps and discussing different methods to reach the same answer. A fantastic start to our new Maths unit! π
π¬ Science – Everyday Materials π
This week in Science, Year 1 have been learning about the properties of everyday materials. We explored what different materials are like by using our senses to look, feel and test a range of objects from around the classroom.
The children learned and used new scientific vocabulary such as hard, soft, stretchy, stiff, shiny, dull, rough, smooth, transparent and absorbent. They investigated objects including fabric, plastic, wood and metal, carefully observing their properties and recording what they found.
We talked about why different materials are chosen for different objects, for example why glass is used for windows or fabric is used for clothing. The children did a fantastic job explaining their ideas and comparing materials, showing great curiosity and scientific thinking throughout the lesson. π
πβοΈ PE – Fitness πβοΈ
In PE this week, Year 1 continued their fitness learning by exploring how exercise helps to keep our bodies strong and healthy. The children focused on noticing how their heart beat changes during different types of activity.
They warmed up with a Red Light, Green Light game, travelling in different ways such as hopping, skipping and jumping, while being mindful of others in the space. The children then took part in Busy Body, Calm Body activities, where they compared high-energy movements with calm, controlled breathing and discussed how each made their bodies feel.
We also enjoyed the Clap Active game, where the speed of the teacher’s claps changed the intensity of the movements. This helped the children understand that when we work harder, our heart beats faster, and when we slow down, our heart beat slows too. π
